Make Consistency Easy
2-Minute Read
Success in running, training, and life is primarily determined by consistency. But consistency is damn hard if you don’t enjoy what you’re doing.
To train consistently, we need to love what we do, which means building a routine that we genuinely enjoy. When we do this, every day is one we look forward to - we can push through hard days, and growth becomes inevitable.
Routine is Everything
Routine is the foundation for any meaningful long-term goal. When we build a routine we love, we make the small, daily efforts feel easier. Over time, those efforts become habits, and habits require far less mental energy to maintain. This is crucial because we are more likely to stick to a routine when it takes less effort.
The key is reducing mental friction. In the beginning, when starting a new activity, we often struggle. We overthink. It’s uncomfortable. It’s straight up hard. But once something becomes part of our routine, the effort required to continue decreases. That’s why creating a routine we enjoy is so powerful—it reduces friction and makes consistency easy.
Why We Learn to Love What We Do
In general, the longer we stick with something, the more we learn to love it. Something changes in our brains - running starts feeling easier, we start to see progress, and… interestingly… we become happier. Not just while we’re running, but throughout the day. Our entire mindset starts to shift. What once felt like a chore, is becoming part of who we are.
And as we learn to love what we do, things get easier yet. It's a virtuous cycle. When we've made this a habit, we can stay consistent. And when we stay consistent, we can achieve far more than we ever thought we could. That's a big deal. And this can be applied to any discipline in our lives.
Training Consistently Leads to Passion
When we stay consistent with our routine, we develop a deeper connection to the activity. This is how passions are built—it’s not something that appears suddenly, but rather grows over time through consistency and improvement. As we continue to make our training a habit, we start to look forward to it, not just because it’s part of our routine, but because we’ve learned to love it.
This is how passion becomes self-sustaining: the more consistent we are, the more we love the process. The more we love it, the more consistent we become. This leads to growth and progress, both in running and in life.
Wrap It Up
Building a routine you love is the key to success. When you create a routine that feels rewarding and enjoyable, staying consistent becomes easier, and your progress becomes inevitable. Over time, this consistency develops into passion, making it easier to stay on track and achieve more than you thought possible.
And with this mindset, we can build a routine we love and train consistently. Because with consistency, we build passion.
