What’s Going on In the Brain
Overcoming challenges brings a deep sense of fulfillment. Here's why (we'll try to be brief):
- Chemical Release: Overcoming challenge stimulates the brain's reward system. Neurotransmitters associated with satisfaction are released, creating a sense of fulfillment. The science is clear: completing tasks, especially challenging ones, significantly increases dopamine levels, reinforcing the desire to take on future challenges.
- Personal Growth and Resilience: Each challenge we overcome makes us stronger. This growth is inherently valuable to the human experience; we are wired to pursue improvement and adapt to our surroundings. A sense of meaning follows.
- Values and Purpose: Actively seeking challenges that aligns with our values will yield deeper purpose. Challenges are transformed from mere obstacles into opportunities to become the type of person we want to be.
It’s Difficult
Embracing challenge is easier said than done.
In the moment, taking this concept to heart and accepting challenge is SO hard. It’s in our DNA to avoid discomfort, at all costs. And the last thing going through your mind at the starting line of your race is “oh, I remember this article from LRC about what gives life meaning…”
And even if we can remember to think critically about challenges in the moment, acting on it is still hard. Doing hard things is… hard. But the answer (as always) is practice! We train our bodies; we train our minds. Just like in running, we need to practice building our mental resilience to facing challenge. We start small, and build over time. And with each successful challenge tackled, we strengthen our ability to confront obstacles, making them feel less daunting over time.
The Cost of Avoidance
If seeking and overcoming challenges leads to fulfillment, what about the opposite?
The truth is, giving up on a challenge you’re facing will lead to discontent. It can leave us feeling more unmotivated, and lost. In a real way, we’ve all experienced this throughout our own lives. We’ve seen both sides - we know where they lead.
It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that a smooth path is the best path, but in reality, growth and fulfillment resides in discomfort. If we identify a challenge that will bring us closer to the type of person we want to be, it’s essential to lean into that discomfort. We’ll move ourselves forward—both as runners and as individuals.
The satisfaction that comes from overcoming obstacles is what makes the journey worthwhile.
