Hard Work is the Goal

Hard Work is the Goal

2 Minute Read

It's intuitive to prioritize outcomes.

But designing our lives around achieving specific outcomes is a total trap. Prioritizing outcomes ultimately shifts our focus away from the personal growth we've gained along the way, and leads to dissatisfaction as the novelty of an achievement fades over time.

If you don’t hit your goal, was the work you put in a total waste? Certainly not. But it can feel that way.

Intrinsic Value of Hard Work

Hard work itself is the goal.

It shapes our character, and changes our direction in life. When we learn to appreciate the grind, for it’s own sake, we cultivate a deep, intrinsic motivation that we take with us everywhere. Early mornings, relentless training sessions, and the moments when we want to give up but push through anyway - this is what we should live for.

This mentality transforms every workout into an opportunity for growth and self-discovery, creating a fulfilling experience where effort is celebrated and acknowledged.

The Adaptation Trap

Designing your life around outcome achievement has a huge pitfall: once you’ve attained something, you get used to it pretty quickly.

The moment we hit a new PR or conquer a challenging race, our minds quickly adjust to that new level of success. We adapt, and suddenly, the joy of achievement fades into the background. You'll require more, and more, and more. And so, looking for happiness in achieving outcomes won’t work - it’ll never be enough.

But when hard work itself is the goal, you can break this loop. The goal, is to become the type of person who works hard, loves doing it, and has built a mental tolerance that allows you to do 10x more than those around you. And when you put the emphasis on your character development, rather than some external achievement, every effort you put in adds value.

Building Resilience and Identity

Embracing hard work fosters resilience and shapes our identity as runners. Challenges will come, and when they do, those who appreciate the effort will see setbacks as opportunities for growth rather than failures. This mindset lets us create a robust foundation of mental strength that supports not only our running but every aspect of our lives.

Lifelong Passion

Ultimately, redefining success as hard work leads to a lifelong passion for running. When we derive joy from the act of training—regardless of the outcomes—we unlock the true essence of what it means to be a runner.

Final Thoughts

Hard work is the goal. It’s what fuels your passion, shapes your journey, and ultimately defines who you are as an athlete. Embrace the grind, cherish the effort, and know that with each step, you’re building a life you love.

And with this mindset, we can build a routine we love and train consistently. Because with consistency, we build passion.
